Does Homeowners Insurance Cover Termites?

Termites can quietly and methodically devastate a home by eating through support beams and destroying other wood features. According to the National Pest Management Association, more than 600,000 U.S. homes suffer from termite infestations, which cause more than $5 billion in property damage each year. Yet, despite those statistics, termites are generally not covered by home insurance.

No Termite Coverage

Typical homeowner’s insurance policies cover accidents, but rarely does that include coverage for damage caused by termites or other pests that could have been prevented with proper home maintenance and termite control. Because of the numerous termite control methods, most insurance carriers will not bail you out if you suffer damage from an infestation.

In fact, many insurance policies specifically state that they exclude coverage for termite damage or “wood-destroying insect damage”, while others contain clauses that simply explain that the coverage is for sudden or unexpected claims only, such as fire or storm damage.

Preventing Termite Infestation & Damage

The good news is that homeowners can avoid damage from termites by preventing an infestation. Here are a few things that you as a homeowner can do to make your home a little less inviting for termite guests.

Remove wood piles and mulch – Since termites feed on wood, piling it next to your home is like a dinner invitation. Consider moving it far from your home’s siding.

Keep your foundation clear – At least two to three inches of your home’s foundation should be visible to aid in early termite detection. Clear away brush, vines and landscaping.

Eliminate clutter – Cardboard may seem harmless, but it’s made of cellulose, the termite’s favorite food source. Always keep your crawl spaces free of clutter and moisture.
