Spring is coming, and if you didn’t know, that means so are the termites. The Eastern Subterranean Termite is the most common and widely distributed termite in the USA. It is the most commonly found species in the Upstate New York area. They’ve can be found most anywhere from Albany, NY to Glens Falls, NY and even going farther up into the northern areas. It is critical that you identify them as soon as possible, as they can cause thousands of dollars in damage to your home. If your home hasn’t been attacked yet, odds are at some point it will fall victim to these guys. It has been estimated that more than 1 in 5 homes have been, or will be attacked in the high activity areas. They are highly destructive pests, especially to douglas fir and other common timbers used for building. The workers are by far the largest caste in the colony, and the one that does the damage. The workers are small in size; about half the size of a match head, soft bodies, and a creamy translucent color, no wings, and sterile. The workers are also blind, and they work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for their entire 2 year life span. Also if you are unsure about if you have termites or not, keep an eye out for swarmers, or reproductives. They are commonly seen when they swarm during daylight hours. They will swarm until they find a mate, in which they will then lose their wings and become a king/queen of a new colony. They are most commonly mistaken for carpenter ants, but when you look closer you will notice that the bodies are not segmented, will have 4 wings of equal size and shape, and they will have straight, beaded antennae.
