6 Pest Control Tips for Spring

Since many insects are dormant in the winter, spring is when most homeowners in Glens Falls, Saratoga, Albany (and everywhere in between) realize that they have a problem with pest control. Fortunately, there are preventative measures that you as a homeowner can take to keep the bugs and rodents away. Simply follow our top 6 pest control tips for spring to reduce your chance of a pest infestation.

How to Keep the Bugs Away

  1. Keep plants and mulch away from your foundation.

A good rule of thumb is to keep plants and mulch at least 3 feet from your house. Termites, in particular, love mulch since it’s made of wood and holds moisture. For ground cover near your foundation, consider using rocks instead. And don’t forget to clean under decks, porches and basements – all popular hiding spots for skunks and raccoons.

  1. Remove standing water and fix leaks.

Stagnant water is a playground for flies and mosquitoes, so dump out water that accumulates in lawn furniture, bird baths, kids’ toys and plant containers. You’ll also want to clean your gutters at least four times a year to ensure that water is flowing properly. And promptly repair any roof and plumbing leaks.

  1. Keep food sources out of reach.

Food sources include trash, bird seed, pet food and even vegetables from your garden. Keep bird feeders at least 100 feet from your house, store pet food in sealed containers inside your home, and garbage in containers with secure lids. Consider installing a fence or netting around gardens.

  1. Reduce clutter.

Clear your garage and attic space of clutter to prevent rodents, such as mice, squirrels and bats from moving into your home. We also recommend that you reduce your number of cardboard boxes. Not only do spiders like to nest in them, but termites are attracted to the cellulose found in cardboard.

  1. Eliminate entry points.

To ensure pests don’t gain access to your home, properly fit screens to all windows and repair tears, replace old weatherstripping around windows and doors, and if there are large holes or cracks, use caulk or steel wool to keep out mice and spiders. Seal any cracks, crevices and gaps in your foundation and around pipes, as well.

  1. Hire a professional exterminator.
